Volubilis was declared UNESCO Heritage Site and it’s the most important archeological site in Morocco. Situated 25km north of Meknes The entrance to the site is through a minor gate in the city wall. The site requires a bit of imagination to reconstruct a city. Yet, you leave with the idea of the Roman city life and its opulence, while it is not hard to identify the essentials of a medieval Arab town in the layout. The drama of the scenario is amazing, so much so that the site was chosen as the location for Martin Scorsese’s film The Last Temptation of Christ.
Meknès is a city with a friendly atmosphere. Historical monuments, particularly the extraordinary creations of Moulay Ismail, justify the visit. The historical importance of Meknes is reflected in its grand Moorish constructions and in Meknes’ close relationship with Volubilis. Meknès one of the Imperial Cities of Morocco. The city’s harmony and charm is complemented by the beautiful surrounding countryside. You will enjoy the ramparts, the beautiful gates, the mosques and magnificent palaces , Moulay Ismail legacy. The souks and the Medina, very well-preserved, were declared UNESCO’s World Heritage site.
